And The Journey Begins ...

iIt's been a little more than 48 hours in real time and yet it feels like a lifetime. I arrived in Frankfurt and joined 5 of the 16 Hadassah Fellows to continue our journey to Kraków. I felt like I was meeting with close friends I hadn't seen in years, even though the reality was that we had only met a few months earlier in person. The rest of the relationships were built online through our mutual love of Hadassah and our preparation for this trip.

After a quick hotel stop we began touring taking in the sites of Kraków. First stop: Schindler's Factory. Made famous by the Spielberg movie, Schindler's List, it is now a museum illustrating Kraków, before, during and after the Nazi rise to power. The was a strong emphasis from all our Polish guides that we understand and more importantly believe, that Poles suffered too, that Poles were victims not willing participants. What they fail to understand is that Poles were imprisoned and murdred because they were in the way. The invading Germans needed their homes. Polish Jews on the other hand were ear marked for extermination, their only crime was being Jewish.

Poland fell to the Germans in 2 weeks. They seemed to want, perhaps need, a validation from us that we believed that they weren't responsible for the deaths of 3.5 million Jews. It wasn't their fault that the Germans invaded. It wasn't there fault that they didn't put up a struggle. What they don't understand is it is not our place to give absolution. In reality, as I now understand better, Nazi Germany found Poland to be a convenient annex for them. A place no one else seemed to care much about, that could be the location, to carry out the final solution. As a result while many work camps and ghettos were in other countries, all the extermination/death camps were in Poland. The clarifation our Polish friends would have us remember is that they were German death camps in Poland, rather than Polish death camps.

The reality of my traveling for 3 weeks is beginning to hit home as I have no more client appointments scheduled, tickets have been reconfirmed, credit card companies called, and the piles of possible clothes on Taylor's bed is growing larger than the size suitcase I intend to take.

But it is almost time. A time for me to reconnect with my history; to be with #thelucky16 - a group of incredible, strong, motivated women hand picked by Hadassah National as the women they have chosen as possible leaders of tomorrow. No pressure there!

As I review the itinerary and prepare I am reminded that we will be going to places that made history. Places that movies have been made about like Schindler's Factory, and Auschwitz, and places that are making history - like Hadassah's hospitals, market places of Tel Aviv and witnessing new beginnings at the wedding of dear friends.

We are reminded that out of the ashes, Israel was born and to fully understand Israel, you must revisit the ashes. It will be a somber start to our journey, but a necessary one.

Watch this spot - or don't. The blog is a journal of sorts of my trip, inspired by my Mother's never ending quest to fill notebooks with her adventures.  A habit that all her children tease her, lovingly for. As I had chance last summer to review some of my own travel journals, I understand that they are filled with my history. Sometimes quite mundane, but every now and again meaningful and always very me.  So here I start, my first ever blog. I hope to make you emote in some fashion. If I do, I have been successful.

Shalom. Am Y'israel Chai!

Happy Mother's Day Me! Does it get any better? Today was perfect. I was with my husband, both my boys, and both my parents!  Witnessing Taylor earning his Bachelor of Science from Penn State was made extra special as we were fortunate to share the day with Skip's Mom, Uncle Freddy, Uncle Mike & Aunt Winona. Only Big Skip was missing and we missed having his take on the whole day - we KNOW you would have had a few choice things to say about the whole show! Catch the video on Facebook - until I figure out how to put it on this page!
